I am trying to figure out how to harden leather for the accordian section of antique fireplace bellows. Traditionally the leather in this section is hardened or dried to the point, that when you flick you finger on an edge it sound and feels like paper. Very tight feel to it like a drum. I am new to leatherworking for man who used to do this has recently died and I have been ask to try to figure out to do this. i have boiled the leather for 10 mins. but it did not harden enough. Can any one give me any suggestions how to get the desired results? It would be greatly appreciated. thank you, chris

Re: harden leather for fireplace bellows
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 7:04 AMI've got a couple sets of leather bellows and have used others while volunteering at the Fort Vancouver smithy. None of them was hardened. In fact, that would make the leather brittle and shorten its lifetime.

Tue, August 11, 2009 - 11:34 AMI think the hardened effect you are thinking of is just a function of age and the heat the bellows is normally near. I would not harden it just attach a goo thick piece of tough but soft leather (buffalo hide is good for that) and bellows away.

Wed, August 19, 2009 - 4:39 PMdefinately what the others said... you want thick leather not the hardness your looking for....
You can also try cow hide as well...
