So I ordered some leather, and I thought I had ordered full grain leather, but I accidentally ordered a split. It's a LARGE piece of hide, but I'm at a loss as to what to make with it. I've not worked with suede b itself before. Any suggestions?

Re: What to do with suede
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 6:20 PMEwww suede! You could return it. I would. Or use it to make welder aprons and leggings. Just remember that it's weak stuff and doesn't need much dirt to become soiled beyond cleaning. -

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 9:44 PMMaybe tool rolls. I have a couple of leather tool rolls that I really like. One is a split, though from very good vegetable tan. it's hard to find a use for suede that isn't utilitarian, but it can be good for that depending on the suede, I mean some of it is near worthless.

Tue, May 13, 2008 - 6:38 PMCut it into scales and lacquer them then make a lamellar armor with them. Interspersed with steel, or brass, scales you can get a very decorative effect to the finished armor. -

All I can really think of are utilitarian applications. I made a seal for the bottom of my winter motorcycle helmet, it seals around the rim of the helmet and leaves a skin-tight hole for my neck. It was supple enough not to chafe my neck, beathable enough not to collect moisture from my breath, and thick enough to keep the wind off my skin. It gets down around zero in the winter where I ride, and then you add 65mph wind-chill-factor on your body, as you can imagine you will become PAINFULLY aware of every square centimeter of exposed skin!
Oh and there's always moccassins of various types, or ugg-type footwear. I've never been a mocasin person myself. -

Wed, May 14, 2008 - 5:57 AMWith the size of the hide I got, there would be a lot left over after I did all the utilitarian stuff I'd need. As far as moccassins, I use Elk Hide. Nothing beats the soft, flexible, but thickness of that leather! Ahhh.....elk hide!

Wed, May 14, 2008 - 5:52 AMI'm making lamellar out of cuirboli tooling leather, so, while that's a good idea, I'm already doing that.
